Our Donegal route
We linked together Killybegs Harbour, Fintra Beach, Largy Viewpoint, the Secret Waterfall and Slieve League. The stops sit naturally along the same coastal direction, but the waterfall must be planned around the tide rather than treated as a casual roadside attraction.
Killybegs Harbour
The harbour gave us calm water, fishing boats and huge Donegal skies. It is an easy stop before heading farther west and a useful contrast to the more dramatic coastline ahead.
Fintra Beach and Largy Viewpoint
Fintra Beach was one of the loveliest easy stops of the day: a broad sandy beach with rocks, shallow water and plenty of space. Largy Viewpoint then opened up the coastline across green fields and Donegal Bay.
The Secret Waterfall: harder than expected
The Secret Waterfall was well worth seeing, but online descriptions can make the approach sound easier than it is. The route involved steep ground, wet and slippery rocks and genuine scrambling. One of us turned back halfway.
Our honest suitability verdict: this is not an easy family stroll and it will not suit everyone. Only attempt it around a safe low-tide window, check current tide information independently, wear footwear with proper grip and turn back if the sea or conditions create any doubt. The coastal cave can become cut off as the tide rises.
Beautiful and genuinely memorable, but more of a scramble than a walk. We would never recommend arriving without checking the tide first.
Slieve League
Slieve League was the finale. Low cloud rolled across the upper slopes, but the cliffs were still enormous and dramatic. The changing weather made the coastline feel properly wild rather than spoiling it.
Conditions can change quickly around exposed cliffs. Keep to marked routes, supervise children closely and check the current visitor and access information before travelling.
Our post-cliffs food stop: The Rusty Mackerel
After Slieve League we stopped at The Rusty Mackerel in Teelin, a traditional pub close to the cliffs. The food was excellent: the fish and chips went down brilliantly, while the fisherman’s pie was exactly what was needed after a day on the coast.

Where we stayed: the honest comparison
Kee’s Hotel
Breakfast included. This was our clear value winner: €45 cheaper at room-only comparison and €75 cheaper once Jackson’s optional breakfast is added.
Jackson’s Hotel
Breakfast not included. The spa and leisure centre sounded promising, but our room had a small bed and we were allocated an accessible room we had not requested. Breakfast was another €30, making €200 in total if added.
The accessible room itself was not the criticism; the problem was receiving a room type we had not asked for, alongside the small bed and a price that did not feel justified by our stay.
A practical one-day or two-day Donegal itinerary
The coastal stops follow a natural westward route from Killybegs towards Slieve League. How much fits comfortably depends on daylight, weather and—if you attempt the Secret Waterfall—the safe low-tide window.
One day: the easier scenic route
- Start at Killybegs Harbour for the fishing fleet and waterfront.
- Continue to Fintra Beach for an easy walk and open coastal views.
- Stop at Largy Viewpoint, then continue west rather than descending to the waterfall.
- Finish at Slieve League, leaving enough daylight for changing weather and the walk from the current visitor access point.
Best for: a relaxed full day with the strongest scenery and no tidal scramble.
Two days: our recommended pace
- Day one: Killybegs Harbour, Fintra Beach and Largy Viewpoint without rushing the photographic stops.
- Day two: attempt the Secret Waterfall only if the tide, weather, footwear and everyone’s confidence are right.
- Continue to Slieve League, then stop at The Rusty Mackerel in Teelin for food.
- Keep a backup plan: skip the waterfall completely if conditions create any doubt.
Best for: allowing proper time for the difficult waterfall approach without squeezing the cliffs into the same rushed window.
Where Kee’s Hotel fits: it was our clear value winner at €125 including breakfast. It is in Ballybofey rather than directly on this coastal route, so allow additional driving at the beginning or end of the day. Rural roads and photo stops can also make the journey take longer than the map first suggests.
What was most worth doing?
Fintra Beach was the easiest beautiful stop. The Secret Waterfall was the biggest adventure but also the one that needs the strongest warning. Slieve League delivered the scale and drama we had driven for.
For a relaxed day, Killybegs, Fintra and the viewpoints work well. Add the waterfall only when tide, mobility, footwear and confidence all line up.
