The real Colombia behind Encanto 🌺

Walk through colourful Colombian villages, see towering wax palms, taste local food and discover the actual places Disney researched before creating the Madrigal family's magical world.

Our family challenge: could four people explore these landscapes from Dublin with a realistic budget — without pretending the animated Casita is a real hotel?

Real research locations, not filming sets — and not a holiday we've taken yet.

Walt Disney Animation Studios confirms its 2018 research team visited Bogotá, Cartagena, Barichara, Salento, San Basilio de Palenque and the Cocora Valley. Encanto is an animated film set in fictional locations, so it has no live-action Colombian filming sites. The actual architecture, people, wildlife and food of Colombia informed its designs. Four real places you can visit

🌴 Cocora Valley

Towering wax palms helped shape Encanto's lush mountainous world. A relaxed viewpoint outing is easier for young children than the full muddy hiking circuit.

Real colourful balconies and colonial-style buildings in Salento, Colombia

🏘️ Salento

Colourful doors, balconies and coffee-region homes that connect with Casita's design. Take a guided coffee farm visit and enjoy the town at a family-friendly pace.

Real cobbled street and stone-and-white colonial houses in Barichara, Colombia

🏠 Barichara

Traditional homes and village streets were researched for the animated setting. It's in Santander, far from Salento: best treated as an optional trip extension, not a short day excursion.

Real colourful Cartagena de Indias street with overhead decorations

🎨 Cartagena

Historic streets, vibrant textiles and courtyard architecture were on Disney's research itinerary. Enjoy a guided old-town walk and consider San Basilio de Palenque with a trusted cultural guide.

Casita isn't a real attraction. The film's magical home draws on more than one regional style; don't confuse a colourful house on social media with an officially verified “Madrigal house.” Disney's own production account is the source for the places above.

What could the kids do in Colombia?

🌴 Wax-palm viewpoints

Take the jeep transfer towards Cocora Valley and choose a short, weather-appropriate walk rather than a strenuous circuit.

☕ Coffee farm visit

Book a family-friendly coffee experience near Salento, with animals, plants, tasting and a look at local farming.

🍲 Colombian food

Try arepas, buñuelos, fresh tropical fruit and hot chocolate, with local cooking or market tours.

🏡 Village architecture

Look for real courtyards, balconies, colour and craftsmanship; travel with a local guide where practical.

🥁 Living culture

Explore Afro-Colombian heritage respectfully on a locally guided Palenque experience if appropriate for your route.

🏊 Pool days

Allow recovery days and select accommodation with a family pool, especially in warm Cartagena.

A family route that actually fits together

Nine nights: Bogotá, Salento and Cartagena

Disney's research covered more places than most families could reasonably visit in one holiday. We'd prioritise three bases rather than racing across Colombia or attempting long overnight road journeys with children.

Nights 1–2: Bogotá

Arrive in Colombia, adjust to altitude, explore museums and food with prearranged transfers. Allow time to settle in.

Nights 3–6: Salento

Fly via Pereira or Armenia as the routing permits. Visit the Cocora Valley, a coffee farm and colourful Salento, with one flexible weather day.

Nights 7–9: Cartagena

Fly from the coffee region, likely with a connection. Enjoy the old town, Caribbean cuisine and family pool breaks before returning home.

Optional two- or three-night extension: Barichara in Santander, accessed via Bucaramanga and a suitable transfer. It is a wonderful architecture connection but adds transport, cost and time; it's not bundled into the nine-night route.

Don't book the cities in this order without checking flights. Domestic services, ground transport, weather and your chosen Dublin return routing will determine the final itinerary. This is a research example, not a protected flight package.
Our budget-first approach

What might a family adventure cost?

We're aiming for a sensible planning total around €9,000–€10,000 for four over nine nights, including a meaningful buffer. This is a spending target, not a live or bookable package quote.

Return international flights for four€4,300
9 nights in family accommodation€1,400
Domestic flights and transfers€850
Meals and groceries€900
Activities and guided experiences€700
Insurance and travel-health allowance€300
Emergency/price-change buffer€650
Working target€9,100

Estimate created 26 October 2026 from indicative allocations, not airline or hotel inventory. Exact dates, ages, luggage, internal flights, travel health requirements and family-room occupancy need pricing. Colombia's regional weather patterns differ markedly; there is no single “best weather month” across Bogotá, the Coffee Region and Cartagena.

Our holiday finder maps the Colombia trail to Bogotá Airport (BOG) as a starting gateway, not a fare covering all regions. Price internal flights and open-jaw options separately; the algorithm's trip totals are estimates.

Essential family travel advice

Safety and entry: do your homework

As of 26 October 2026, Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs advises a high degree of caution for Colombia. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to certain regions. The advisories apply to specific areas and change, so check all planned destinations and road routes individually before booking.

Use reputable pre-booked transport, avoid unlicensed street taxis, don't travel isolated roads at night, and plan any rural excursions with experienced local operators. Consider altitude in Bogotá, seasonal heavy rain, mosquito protection and travel medicine advice, including yellow fever vaccination guidance for certain regions and travellers.

Irish passport holders are generally visa-exempt for tourist visits up to 90 days, subject to current entry requirements. UK passport holders should check the UK-specific rules independently. Child passports, vaccination advice and travel insurance should all be checked before any financial commitment.

This is not a blanket claim that Colombia is safe everywhere. Travel advice, transport conditions, vaccination guidance and local risks may change.

Colombia has region-specific travel warnings. Check the Irish DFA and UK FCDO guidance, any planned internal flights and the safety of the exact route before you book; the provider searches below focus on Bogotá and do NOT verify a multi-region holiday.
