The real islands behind Moana

Dreaming of a family adventure to the South Pacific? Discover the real Tahitian islands that informed Disney’s animated world, paddle a Polynesian canoe and explore Moorea’s spectacular lagoon.

Our challenge: can four people travel from Dublin for less than €15,000 — without hiding the hard bits?

Honest planning guide — not a trip we've taken yet.

Disney’s 2016 Moana is animated. Motunui is fictional, and there are no outdoor “filming locations” for that version. Tahiti Tourisme says Disney’s research team visited Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine. These islands are inspirations, not identical real-life versions of movie scenes. The live-action remake is a different production.

The real-world connections

Three islands, three different adventures

Actual Moorea tropical lagoon and mountain ridges

🏝️ Moorea — mountains & lagoon

Cook’s Bay, Opunohu Bay, lush volcanic ridges and gentle family-friendly lagoon excursions. This is the island where we'd spend most of the holiday.

🌺 Huahine — Te Fiti connection

The Mount Tavaiura silhouette near Fare is associated by Tahiti Tourisme with the story of Te Fiti. Reaching Huahine means an extra island transfer.

Places you can genuinely experience

These are real photographs, not AI scenes or screenshots from Disney. The canoe photograph was taken near Vaitāpē in Bora Bora, not Moorea; it illustrates the wider Polynesian outrigger tradition.

Do something real

Five experiences we'd investigate with the kids

🛶

Try a traditional va'a

Learn how Polynesian outrigger canoes are paddled and why ocean navigation matters. Choose an operator with suitable child sizes and safety equipment.

🐠

Lagoon and ray watching

Guided lagoon excursions can include snorkelling stops to observe rays, reef sharks and tropical fish. Respect wildlife: don't feed or touch animals, and supervise younger swimmers closely.

Moorea excursion ideas →

🥁

Te Pu Atiti'a cultural centre

The especially meaningful Disney connection: founder Hinano Murphy advised on the original film as an Oceanic Story consultant. A Moorea Tiki Tour land-and-sea trip lists a guided centre visit.

🐋

Whales in season

Humpback whales visit during roughly July–November. Book responsible boat-based watching for children; open-ocean whale swimming has demanding safety requirements and age rules.

Check whale season →

🌴

Beaches & viewpoints

Try Temae Beach, a family picnic, or the Belvedere lookout by car. Leave room for unplanned pool days — not every day needs an expensive tour.

Explore Moorea →

Disney connection, carefully verified: The Walt Disney Company identified Hinano Murphy as an Oceanic Story consultant and the director/founder of Te Pu Atiti'a. The cultural centre is an independent working site, not an official Disney attraction. The tour operator says centre access can occasionally be denied.
Plan a sensible route

How we'd spend around 15 nights

Nights 1–2 · Tahiti

Arrive after the long flight, recover, explore Papeete and enjoy easy family activities.

Nights 3–14 · Moorea

Take the short ferry to a self-catering bungalow. Mix beaches, a cultural outing, lagoon exploration and several quieter days.

Night 15 · Tahiti

Ferry back ahead of the international departure to reduce connection risk.

Optional Huahine extension

Replace several Moorea nights with Huahine if an inter-island flight or ferry and extra cost fit the plan; otherwise keep it for another trip.

Typical Papeete–Moorea ferry crossing: 30–45 minutes. Official transport guide → Flight arrival and return dates, especially across the International Date Line, determine the exact nights needed.

Tell us what you can spend

Can four people do it for less than €15,000?

That's the challenge we're investigating — not a guaranteed package price. Here is a target spending envelope for an approximately two-week family trip from Dublin, rather than a live quote.

Four return flights€7,000
Self-catering accommodation€3,300
Food and groceries€1,550
Ferries, car and transfers€1,050
Family activities€800
Insurance and travel authorisations€400
Extra buffer€600
Target total€14,700

What we have actually researched

We spotted an August 2027 flight search around €6,747 for four, but with long US connections. A separate 13-night August accommodation search at Lagoon Dream showed €3,993.

Those searches used different dates and cannot be added together as a bookable holiday. The exact bungalow, baggage, taxes, child ages and return dates still need confirming.

No holiday is booked. Prices move and shoulder-season travel may conflict with school terms.

Last research review: 26 October 2026. All figures in euros; actual prices depend on dates, people, inclusions and availability. Our family-target estimates are not advertised prices, forecasts or offers.

Where to stay & how to go

Family accommodation and getting there

Aerial photograph of overwater bungalows along the real Moorea lagoon; illustrative of resort style rather than the shortlisted Lagoon Dream accommodation
Real Moorea lagoon resort photo by Vincent Gerbouin / Pexels. Not Lagoon Dream or a claim about our shortlisted bungalow.

Our lead place to enquire about: Lagoon Dream on Moorea, including a bungalow named Moana. We have emailed the property for a direct quote. The property's official tourism listing can be used to contact the operator and verify details before paying. Neither a room price nor availability is confirmed.

Other options: family-run guesthouses and self-catering bungalows with kitchens can help reduce food costs. Ask whether the exact room sleeps your full family, whether a pool is included, and how easy it is to reach a swimmable beach.

Don't book a tight DIY flight connection. Typical Dublin routes involve at least one long-haul transit. Some transit via the United States: check each traveller's authorisation or visa requirements and whether the flights are on one protected ticket. Allow time for baggage, immigration and the ferry.

Why we made this guide

We're a family travel project based in Ireland. Our goal is to compare real possibilities, not pretend we've visited somewhere we haven't. We want to visit the islands that inspired Moana, learn from local Polynesian guides and see whether an ambitious family holiday could be affordable with careful planning.

Tell us what you can spend. We'll show you how far it can take you.

Prefer snowy mountains to tropical lagoons? We've also researched the real Norwegian locations behind Frozen and a six-night family winter adventure.
