What was really filmed here?

Glenfinnan Viaduct and the West Highland Line appeared in the Harry Potter films during the Hogwarts Express journey. Loch Shiel doubled as the lake near Hogwarts. The magical school, railway platform and train in the story are fictional. The Jacobite tourist steam service runs on this real railway when the operator schedules it; it is not a guaranteed year-round Hogwarts Express service. Edinburgh's connections are primarily linked to the writing of the books, not a claim every city site featured as a film set.

Five real places and family experiences

Glenfinnan Viaduct viewpoint

See the actual viaduct used in film scenes from official paths and viewpoints. A train crossing is not guaranteed; check transport timetables. Don't enter rail tracks or unsafe ground.

The West Highland Line

If the Jacobite steam train is scheduled and available, compare ticket rules and timings; otherwise the regular rail line provides an authentic Highland journey at a different price.

Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan Monument

Take in the lake views connected to the movies and learn real Jacobite history at the visitor attractions. These are not fantasy sets.

Mallaig fishing harbour

Enjoy the scenic railway terminus, harbour views, fish-and-chip stop and a relaxed town walk with children.

Glencoe and Glen Etive

Explore genuine Highland scenery connected with Harry Potter filming on appropriate guided or short family-friendly visits, not a difficult mountain hike.

Bring the kids, not just the camera

Choose slower mornings, suitable breaks and the attractions the whole family will enjoy. Some locations need transport, guided tickets, steep stairs or a particular season β€” none should be presented as guaranteed.

We use original location photos so readers can see where they are actually visiting.

Our researched 5-night family route from Ireland

1 β€” Ireland to Scotland

Fly into Glasgow and arrange hire-car collection, child seats and insurance. Travel to a West Highland base at a manageable pace; avoid a long drive immediately after a very late arrival.

2 β€” Glenfinnan viewpoint

Visit the official viaduct viewpoints and Loch Shiel. Allow a rain-friendly alternative and use safe marked paths.

3 β€” Railway adventure

Enjoy the Fort William–Mallaig railway if services, reservations and weather permit. A regular train is an alternative if the steam service is not running.

4 β€” Mallaig or West Coast day

Take a relaxed harbour day, beach stop in suitable weather, or short coastal family outing.

5 β€” Highland landscape day

Choose Glencoe or Glen Etive viewpoints, with frequent rest stops and careful supervision near water and roads.

6 β€” Homeward journey

Return towards Glasgow, allowing plenty of journey time, and fly back to Ireland. The sample covers five hotel nights, not necessarily five days total.

Season, accessibility and safety

When to plan it

The popular Jacobite steam service is seasonal and its future season dates, rail vehicles and availability are operator-controlled. The official 2026 timetable page displayed dates as to be confirmed when checked. Check the operator again before using steam train tickets as the centrepiece of a holiday. Scottish weather is changeable year-round; some viewpoints are wet, windy or muddy.

What to check with children

Keep children behind barriers and never trespass onto viaducts, railway property or road bridges for photography. Glenfinnan paths may be muddy or steep, and car parks can fill quickly. Reserve train tickets only after confirming that a service is actually operating. The guide does not include tickets or live fares.

Also check passports and transit permissions, holiday insurance, baggage, ground transfers, family room capacity and booking cancellation terms.

Questions families ask

Is Glenfinnan Viaduct in Harry Potter?

Yes. The real viaduct appears in the Harry Potter film series during the train journey. This is a genuine on-location filming connection.

Can children ride the Hogwarts Express?

The Hogwarts Express is fictional, but a tourist steam service called the Jacobite runs on part of the same railway when scheduled. Check the operator's confirmed dates and ticket availability first.

Is this the same as our Brave Scotland guide?

No. Brave explores Dunnottar Castle and the Cairngorms; this plan focuses on Glenfinnan, Fort William, Loch Shiel and the western Highlands.

Can we see the train from the viewpoint?

Only if a train actually runs at the time. Check official railway times, arrive safely, and never go onto tracks or restricted land.
